About The Charts.

Why are our charts different, enjoying acceptance in more that 50 countries around the world and being used in productions ranging from mulit-million dollar Hollywood blockbuster film and digital productions to students work around the world?

Because they have features which no one else offers, not only showing you pretty pictures but guiding you and supporting you with objective data, helping you to navigate through the maze of today’s production and post-production.

3cP charts indicate and help you with :

1. The position of each Rec 709 and REDcolor color and each shade of gray on the waveform monitor and vectorscope is shown in voltage and percentage right on the chart, helping you to adjust the proper luminance (brightness) of the scene, camera gamma settings and related voltage output

2. Fstops related to each grey field are shown on the chart.  Each voltage or percentage field is calibrated in T-stops clearly marked on the chart. Those fields represent the practical latitude (density range) of current and future HD technology.. It helps you to to make your own assessment and evaluation of the dynamic range of any digital camera or film stock and to control the transfer.

3. The Ramp (linear sweep) scale shows the relationship between voltage and brightness as a continuous line or characteristic curve. This curve is especially helpful when making knee, b/w balance and gamma adjustments.

4. Key Grey (±0 Fstop) which is not (necessarily)  18%  for digital cameras

5. The Black velvet patch serves as a reference for minimum “black”  field voltage / percentage respond.

6. Easily Recognizable Colors  - greenery, skin tone  and blue sky are included on our  chart. Why do you need them? Rec.709 , REDcolor  and other  are abstract color spaces not connected to everyday human experience. How would you know that red in Rec 709 is more yellowish, and green is more bluish? But by simply looking at the “Easily Recognizable Colors”: sky, greenery and skin tone -the colors that people from all over the world readily agree on  and experience practically every day – you can easily and quickly detect even the slightest variation from “norm”  without any meter or other instrument . The presence of those  colors on the chart also help to facilitate better communication between the cinematographer  and colorist.

7. DIY testing of ISO and Dynamic range  of any camera  and film stock

Thorough Control System (Color Control Charts)

Gamma & Density Co. has designed the "Thorough Control System" (T.C.S.) to help cinematographers arrive at the "look" they desire during a film-to-tape transfer session thereby maintaining artistic and technical control over their images. The system begins on the set and establishes standards of communication with the telecine colorist in the film-to-tape transfer process and in HD color correction and camera setting processes.

The key element of the system is the Cinematographer's Control Chart. Now, instead of subjective and debatable opinions regarding images, the cameraman and telecine colorists are speaking a common language.

The charts have one distinguished feature that sets this aside from other charts: the idea of connecting brightness of the scene with the IRE unit, F-stops and zone system. These charts create a proper connection between the brightness of the scene and luminance of the electronically converted film signal. The system also introduces Easily Recognizable Colors (E.R.C.): skin tone, blue sky and greenery.

With the use of the system, the telecine colorist is able to transfer dailies with accurate and consistent contrast, color, and tone renditions. This continuity in dailies takes the guesswork out of the transfer set-up process.

Our Thorough Control System (T.C.S.) provided a major technical breakthrough by virtue of the original and innovative engineering approach to the problem. The Thorough Control System is successfully working in 30 countries worldwide.

For the last few years, Gamma & Density Company, Inc. has focused on the next stage of research and development of color management system for film and TV industries called 3cP - Color Correction Control Program. The Gamma & Density Color Chart plays important role of uniting old and new systems.

The result of this research is the creation of leading-edge technology that transfers images, i. e. ability to transfer images fast and without losses, between different digital color imaging systems used in film, television, Hi-Def Television and Digital Cinematography. All those processes and systems are currently not based on any common color reproduction system.
